(coptic binding)I made a guestbook for my father's memorial service. He died in January. The memorial service was to be in March, postponed indefinitely now because of mandatory self-distancing and isolation.
Will there be a memorial service on the other side of this? Or will there be another celebration that needs a record of guests instead? Who knows?

Sometimes I have giant chocolate bars hidden in my flat file. If you are reading this, there are no chocolate bars at the moment, so don't go looking. But I do have, among the scholarly tomes, a small stash of comics. I'm not sure why. there they sit, Archie and Jughead, Love and Rockets, Conan the Barbarian, two signed Usagi Yojimbo, and a copy of an old ten cent Jungle Comics featuring Fantomah, Mystery Woman of the Jungle.
Some days a person just needs a big mug of tea and a comic book. kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-64201811873431101762020-04-10T20:40:00.000-07:002020-04-11T17:18:30.356-07:00I made this...(sewn over tapes)I made this for a show that was to open in June at University of Puget Sound. Now I have to come up with an artist statement. Somehow I do not think "I was desperate. This was all I could come up with." is what the exhibit committee wants to hear. kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-44169652270262873402020-04-08T20:27:00.000-07:002020-04-08T20:27:02.257-07:00OrganizationDissatisfied with my paint organization, I purchased these two picture shelves from Ikea. I thought I'd put them on the wall over my drawing table, but it turns out the former "paint cubby" is where they belong. Those metal shelves on the side are from Ikea too (kitchen dept.), as is the pretty metal utensil holder, both purchased several years ago. I have to add that the metal utensil holder has holes on the bottom too, so all the smaller brushes fell right through until I put a round of cardboard in the bottom.

Two months have passed, and despite several messy paint sessions, the paints remain tidy. When it works, it works.
To be sure, the view is better. This lovely tug is the Island Venture, making her Salish Sea gravel run from south to north on a quiet spring evening. She often chugs past my sister's kitchen window on her way to Anacortes and beyond. She is likely unaware that I wave and wish her a good journey whenever I see her, but I wave anyway.

On this night, mist turns the islands to gray, and my town is bathed in the soft peach light of a spring sunset.
I do realize that in the blogging world I have been social distancing like a pro for several years. I got a little bored with blogging and I got a lot busy with life--sometimes way too busy. Now my main time-chomper-- working as a theatre set painter--has come to an abrupt painful full stop as theatres everywhere closed.

I will emerge on the other side of this OK, but not unchanged. Social distancing and uncertainty make us all long for contact and communion. We'll see how this goes. kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-26020820554931688252016-04-05T21:33:00.000-07:002016-04-05T21:33:39.253-07:00bridge.2This is the book I made for the 2015 Puget Sound Book Artists' annual exhibit at the University of Puget Sound. The book is a star book format. I used my very large collection of bridge photographs for this one. Each page has three layers: the back layer is painted paper, the middle layer is a black and white photograph printed on a transparency, and the top layer is more painted paper that I cut in shapes related to the bridge I had photographed. I documented the photos on a piece of card that fits into a pocket on the back cover. The card also serves to show the book's title, which peeks out over the top of the pocket when the card is inside.

It has been over a year since I have touched this blog, I know. Busy and Sloth won out over Good Intentions, but now that things have settled, I am back. Over the last year we have had births and deaths, new jobs and retirements, steep learning curves, computer messes and a bit of banging my head against the wall, but I have always managed to fit studio time in somewhere.

So...now we play catch-up. I'll start with most recent work, just finished and photographed and ready to submit for Puget Sound Book Artists' 2016 show next summer. It is called Red, for obvious reasons. It is a small book (about 3 7/8" square) long stitch binding over tapes. I made my own book cloth from antique kimono silk, and made the tapes from kimono silk as well. I confess I do not know what kind of paper the signatures are made from. The paper is a friend's left-overs, snatched up by me because of its lovely texture and "sew-ability."

I am really fascinated with the work of artist Junko Oki. These little
studies are not me trying to emulate her work-- which is beautiful and
mysterious and unique-- but more me thinking about mending and patching
and being inspired by this artist. It was also time for me to justify my
hoard of red silk by actually using it.

For the 24 pages, I cut eleven small printing blocks, and 24 random pieces of red kimono liner silk. I set the silk on the page and printed over it, then after the ink dried, sewed the silk down with white thread. The sewing was rhythmic, but not preplanned. I just started in and continued until I was happy. I reused several of the blocks, but every page is unique due to the different shape of the scraps and the sewing.

On impulse, I sewed three silver bells to the spine. I love the tiny sound they make whenever I open the book.

The cover paper is paste paper I made. I think paste paper and I are a match made in heaven. All my wood graining tools from theatre come into play here, but nothing has to look real! In fact, it can look as unreal as I want! How cool is that? The binding thread for the faux wood book is dark brown hemp (found in the jewelry-making section of a craft store). The binding thread for the blue book is rayon knitting tape.
You can see a bit of pattern underneath the paint on the blue book. This is because I painted my paste paint over some printed paper leftover from a wedding shower project. The print was perfect for the party, but way too pink and sweet for any book project of mine. I love how the pattern shines through from below.
Meet Beckham, an eleven month old Border Collie we just adopted 3 days ago. When our best-dog-ever Cody died in May 2013, I didn't know if I could ever have another dog. I was afraid no pup could ever fill that spot. But I missed having a sidekick, especially a Border Collie sidekick, and so did Mr. B. We knew we would prefer another rescued dog, so we started looking and this little guy appeared. Dumped by the side of a road along with his mother, the two dogs fended for themselves for a few weeks until some kind souls decided to try to catch them. The catching took two days, then it was off to a foster mom near Boise, Idaho. She is an extraordinary lover of dogs, and is quite selective in her adoptions. Fortunately for us, we passed muster, and were able to bring him home with us. I'm in love already. kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-26941154822036230342014-06-12T07:00:00.000-07:002014-06-12T07:00:03.762-07:00Life. Whew.Dropped off the grid again, I know. Sorry. But Life happens sometimes and remembering to document every little thing isn't something I do. So, things that keep me from blogging (apparently) are:

Work

Suddenly getting laid off from work and feeling quite unhappy about it

One of our five lovely offspring requiring what we shall call Transitional Housing, leading to

Seven weeks of child sleeping on our couch, during which

Master bath remodel continued (three adults, one toilet, one shower)

Hosting son-in-law for a bit while he relocated from Arizona for new job

(four adults, one toilet, one shower)

Realizing how really spoiled we are to whine over sharing a bathroom

Getting daughter and babies moved up from Arizona, which didn't take much physical effort but took over our entire brains for a month

Finishing a book for Puget Sound Book Artist's Annual Exhibit

Building several new books (photos soon)

Making several books with a grandson (a new convert!)

Bathroom remodel, bathroom remodel, bathroom remodel

Getting married

Trip to Washington DC

Yes, you heard right. Mr. B and I finally tied the knot last month! We have been together a long time. I joke that I just wanted to be really sure we had what it takes to be married. But I figure if we can, in the course of the 11-ish years we've been together, marry off four of our five children (two of his, both of mine), welcome three grandchildren, deal with the death of two parents, one brother and our beloved dog, survive one knee replacement (his), buy a new car, travel, and probably the truest Test of Love, gut and remodel two bathrooms and one kitchen without strangling each other... we are probably going to be OK with whatever else comes our way. I am one lucky girl.

Way back in May I wrote about the maze fold book I was making about bridges. It was a long process, but very satisfying. Here is what I ended up with:
It was a very long painting process until I got the finish just the way I wanted it. My experience painting for theatre comes into play here-- I have many years of faking it under my belt (and under my fingernails, splattered all over my glasses, matted in my hair...) so I can make paper look like rusty metal and peeling paint. The book is about 6x6 inches. The front and back covers look very waxy- so much so that my sister thought they were an encaustic finish. Exactly the effect I was going for! Yes, it is my favorite secret sauce- acrylic wax varnish. I have many layers- possibly five or six- of that painted over the printed cover. The bridge prints on the front and back covers are from photographs I have taken while crossing the trestle bridge over the Puyallup river on Highway 99. I turned them into black-and-white images in Photoshop, printed them, and transferred the printed images to rice paper, then added collage elements and began adding layers of acrylic wax varnish.

The book will be in the Puget Sound Book Artists' exhibit in June 2014 at University of Puget Sound's Collins memorial Library. kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-58967398962341136492014-03-13T16:16:00.000-07:002014-03-13T16:16:00.567-07:00SewnIn late summer (August, perhaps?) I signed myself up for an online class offered by one of my favorite bloggers, Mary Ann Moss of Dispatch From LA. It wasn't because I didn't already know how to paint patterns or sew on paper. I just needed help finding that creative spark last summer, and this class sounded fun. The class is called SEWN, and is an exploration of pattern-painting, chopping those pretty papers to bits, then madly sewing them back together into little books, lanterns, paper curtains...you name it. Did I do all the projects and "finish " the course? Ummm, no. Was it nonetheless worth every penny? Yes. And here are some reasons:

No Pressure. You were supposed to have fun, and not think too much. In the beginning, just pick colors and crank it out. No measuring or sketching first or waiting until you can purchase just the right paper. Just paint.

No Precious. Then just when I thought I was getting the hang of everything, I had to chop all those pretty papers up. What?! Really? Yes, really. I didn't think I wanted to do that, but I did it anyway. And what a freeing feeling that was.

No Rules. Well, of course there were guidelines, but once I got started, even several of the guidelines ended up on the cutting room floor. The two books I made didn't look like the guideline books, but I'm sure if Mary Ann saw them, they would meet with her approval. Most importantly they met with my approval.

No End In Sight. I can still return to the class (saved passwords!) and finish it. Maybe I will, and maybe I won't. I do still paint patterns when I am at creative loose ends, and I chop them up without hesitation when I need a little something on a project. I can always make more.

So thank you, Mary Ann Moss. It was just what I needed. It was a great online class. It still is.
For Reals This TimeOK, so October, November, lalalalala February went by and nothing. Trust me, things were happening, just not so much blogging. OK, no blogging. Work, work, painting a set, holidays, never-ending bathroom remodel, and work happened. Oh, and a Day of the Dead wedding, a joyous occasion totally worth blogging about, but book-ended by more work.

Then at the end of February, I was rather unceremoniously laid off. As much as that job had taken over all my waking moments, I did like it there, and being booted out has been the cause of much grousing on my part. The upside is that while I am home nursing my wounded whatevers, I have had a lot of time to spend in the studio. I have thought a lot about the blog, but decided that while I was still in that place where I had trouble saying ANYTHING nice, I should probably refrain from posting.

I'm feeling better now.

PS Isn't that wedding cake the coolest? And it was vegan, as were those very lovely cupcakes.
Last Tuesday evening, I went to the first ever adult-swim craft night at Tacoma's new creative-reuse center, Tinkertopia. Tacoma artists Ryan and Darcy Anderson opened this venue, with the help of Tacoma's Spaceworks Program, in the U-district on Pacific Avenue this summer. Tinkertopia, in their own words, is "A destination for teachers, students, artists, crafters, inventors, makers, hackers, and tinkerers (of any age) in search of unusual materials for any creative venture." The items they collect through donation range from paper and cardboard tubes to what-the-heck-is-THAT. Items are sold in bulk by the bag. Bags come in three sizes. Zany ideas are free for the asking. Tinkertopia also has a drop-in craft space filled with tools, sewing machines and glue-guns, where $7 gets you an hour and a half of studio time in the store.
I don't need studio space. I have that in my home. I also have plenty of my own "stuff." But I really really want this place to succeed. It is such a wonderful idea, run by young, energetic, creative people who are willing to take one of those out of the box chances. It is a kid's (yes even a geriatric kid) wonderland. It is a Place of Possibility. I wish it had been around when my sons were young. I can imagine handing them each a $10 bill and a bag, saying, "You have 30 minutes to find your Halloween costume! Go!" It's also a place to share those items you hate to throw away, but have no use for yourself-- like those sturdy cardboard tubes from the large format printer where I work.
It's hard to describe Tinkertopia. You really need to just go there. You need to browse. You need come back and browse again, because stock changes all the time and you really did miss something last time you looked. I had a great time Tuesday night. I met some new people, I finished stitching up a journal, and I selected a few Mystery Items to bring home. I have a Nebulous Plan. I'll keep you posted.kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-191387356792666482013-09-26T13:59:00.000-07:002013-09-29T17:45:09.912-07:00London Part 2: Historic Feet

One of the things I got rather obsessed with in the museums was feet. Statues being on plinths, those feet are right at eye level, but what is everyone else looking at? Faces. Well, I did look at the faces, but I took pictures of the feet. You start noticing the successful sculptors of feet, and the less than successful. The really long toes. The sandals that look surprisingly contemporary. The bronze foot guards that probably did not catch on too well with anyone who needed to do a bit of running....
So we had the opportunity to visit London for a couple weeks in May. Mr. B and I had both been to Great Britain before, but never together. Of course we had a great time, are you kidding? It was London! The May weather was windy and drizzly and pretty much exactly like the Pacific Northwest, so we felt right at home. We stayed in a rented flat in Clapham (Airbnb) and we walked miles and miles. We took a boat to Greenwich and a train to Canterbury. And I finally got to Carnaby Street- a bucket list item since my teenage years, way before lists came in buckets.
I really do have the best of intentions, and I have a lot- A LOT- of things to talk about.

I went to London! I took pictures!

My friend Ryan opened the coolest place in downtown Tacoma called Tinkertopia.

The 500 Handmade Books, Volume 2 came out this month, and I have two books included.

And I took an online class from Mary Ann Moss (of Dispatch From LA). Sort of. I did most of the class and I do have some things to say about that. And they are good things, Mary Ånn, honest.

But mostly I have been working at the "real" job, which takes hours and hours of my week, and when that happens, some things must go on the back burner, and one of those simmering pots is Le Blog.
Today, while babysitting someone who is taping and mudding our new bathroom walls, I was able to work from home, which cut at least three hours of commute time out of my day, which is wonderful. Also dangerous, because, well, here I am. Making promises to myself to get back into the bloggy thing.

So there you have it: my blog to-do list made public. Putting my game face on. I'll start with some London eye-candy (as opposed to the actual London Eye which I prefer to View from Afar, thanks anyway), and since I will be at Tinkertopia tomorrow night for a bit of fun, I'll do that next. And here we go. I hope. kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-44253776141756202642013-06-05T22:43:00.000-07:002013-06-05T22:43:26.802-07:00PSBA Third Annual Exhibition

I have been super busy, spending long hours at work lately, but I am really looking forward to tomorrow night, which is opening night for our Puget Sound Book Artists Third Annual Members' Exhibition. When I dropped my own book off on Tuesday I caught glimpses of other pieces that will be in the show, and now I can hardly wait to see what else will be there. I am always both humbled and excited that I am in the company of such amazing talent.

If you are in the Puget Sound area, this show runs through July 31, so you have all summer to find time to see it. The University of Puget Sound campus is lovely in summer, and the Collins Memorial Library is easy to find on campus. Walk in the main doors, head through the lobby, and you will run right in to the exhibit. And if you want a real treat, come on the evening of June 20. That night, from 5-8 PM, the cases housing the artwork will be opened up, and the artists will have the opportunity to show off their books (turning the pages for you!) and to talk briefly about their work. That is always my very favorite part of the exhibition, and you can be sure I will be there. There are so many things you can learn about each piece that you just don't discover by looking at it sitting in a glass case. Books, after all, are really meant to be held. Conversation with the Artists night is the next best thing to holding the books yourself.

In other news, I recently had the opportunity to stay in London for a couple of weeks. Do I have pictures? Oh yes, of course I do. And I will be sharing some of them very soon. Stay tuned...kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07193260777089317556noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595095868196411175.post-2175344809278385722013-05-06T07:32:00.000-07:002013-05-06T07:32:00.520-07:00Another Maze Fold BookMany years ago, I was fortunate to have the chance to take week-long workshop with one of my all time favorite fiber artists, Jan Beaney. One of her design exercises was to begin a photo file of textures-- close-ups of wood, rock, paint, rust-- anything showing interesting texture. That habit has stuck with me and I now have a large file of photos, and an even larger digital file of photos to sort through when I am looking for inspiration. What I noticed, while looking through my digital file a few months ago, was that I seem to compulsively photograph every bridge I encounter.
